Business Feature – Martina Thornhill
Martina Thornhill:Martina has always been creative, creating everything from clothing, jewelry, leather work to graphic design. Once she found her niche her business grew. She makes amazing ceramic pieces (I am going to have to get my hands on one of them soon). Built in her home studio, her creations are built to last. Each individual piece is thoughtfully created, taking into account patterns, textures, colours and flow. Originally from Canada, she now lives in Portland Oregon with her husband Drew, a fat cat named Toad and a lazy hound dog named Huck.
Inspiration & Support: Martina’s support comes from her husband and her friends. Her husband helps with production and moral support. He is also constructing a new studio for her to work from. Jen from Takara has been a mentor to her and full of encouragement and advice. She also gets a lot out of connecting with like-minded artists and supporters on Instagram. She enjoys taking time out of her studio to be outside with nature and meet with people who continuously inspire her. Over the holidays she occasionally will have help from interns for producing her work.
I still can't believe this is my life at times and I feel insanely privileged to be able to make a living from my art.
Day-to-Day & Overcoming Obstacles: Her mornings start off as many of ours do: with a cup of coffee. After breakfast with her husband, she works in the studio. Throughout her day she will do glazing, roll slabs, cut handles, do firing and ship orders. Overnight she has pieces in the kiln. For the most part she likes to keep a schedule, but can sometimes work well into the following morning. The biggest challenge she faces is finding a balance between production and her personal life.
Future Goals: Martina is looking forward to where this will take her, she is full of ideas, but for the most part she is content doing what she loves.
