MR AND MRS MUNRO:
This talented husband and wife team, Colin and Brooke, created a business with design inspired and sustainable items. Each mastering their individual crafts, their items come together beautifully. Brook is an expert in basketry and Colin has a jack of all trades background and a love for natural materials.
Their business started out by creating pieces to decorate their own home. Once their bundle of joy, Ruby, came into the picture, their lives changed to become family focused. Colin left the building industry to be home more often. This is where their hobbies became a business.
The main purpose for what they're doing is to do what they love, which is what I believe life should be all about. They want to create a lifestyle that can be shared with their children and loved ones.
Colin left school to become a 'Jackaroo' and has always had a strong connection to the country.
She majored in fine arts focusing on sculptural textiles and he has always been a builder. Working on different elements for farming or survival purposes, he has always had a strong connection with the outdoors.
Inspiration + Support:
Their greatest inspiration comes from the pieces they make their designs from: found objects, natural fibers and fallen timber. Natural materials are their inspiration, giving found materials a second life. From there they create by letting the objects speak for themselves.
Living in a small village in New South Wales, Australia where there is a Pub and a butchers shop. They rely strongly on an online presence and most of their work sold in person is by word of mouth. The community they live in is very supportive. The local farmers and villagers notify them if there is a fallen tree or an interesting object to be found. Her parents live close by and take over babysitting duties, as well as help out here or there polishing or prepping pieces for shows and markets.
Day-to-Day:
With foraging their own timber, finding enough storage and work space is one of their greatest hurdles. She works inside making her baskets with a toddler running around. Colin uses a crane he once found to help move the fallen timber he finds.
Between changing diapers, household chores, and making lunches she works on her pieces and answers their emails. Everything they do, they do themselves and what they do is amazing things with the time they have.
Future Goals:
They aim to have Mr&MrsMunro become a full time business that will provide for the needs of their family. They also want to push the boundaries of sustainable furniture and homeware design.
