Why You Don't Need an Accredited Program

You don't need an accredited program!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is a buzzword going around and is causing confusion for new homeschoolers. We want to put the record straight. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
NO state or province requires a homeschooling program or curriculum to be accredited because they can't be. It's like saying your fridge needs to be able to fly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Often when a new homeschooler is doing a little research and learning about homeschooling they come across the word 'accredited'. Immediately this word is assumed to be something that a program should be. This is not the case for homeschooling curricula, in fact, homeschool curriculum can't be accredited! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Accreditation is something an educational institution that has teachers on staff can purchase. Most homeschooling companies that are selling a curriculum are not offering the service of having a teacher come to your home to teach your child. A company that does not offer teaching services can not be accredited. That already makes accreditation not necessary if you are homeschooling. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Secondly, accreditation is governed by private companies. Meaning each company can decide what standards they want to cover. It is more important that your curriculum complies with your state's/province's educational standards. You should look for a curriculum that covers Common Core Education Standards (like @habitatschoolhouse does!). You can look up the standards for your area on your cities or states website. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Share this with your homeschooling friends and spread the word that accreditation applies to companies with teachers, not the homeschooling curriculum you are following.
