Organic Quilt Company
Recently, I was fortunate to stumble across THE PERFECT burping cloths for our little tiny human. It was my very first purchase for our baby and I knew it was the right choice. Based off the happy camper banner from White Brix, I knew that wanted to have a camping outdoors theme for the nursery. When I found the vintage camper print burping clothes, I just couldn’t resist. It encompasses everything that I am. It’s a vintage print, it fits the nursery theme, it supports small business, it's handmade and it's organic. I hit the jackpot when I found Organic Quilt Company. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to feature them on my blog and to have one of their items in our home.
Organic Quilt Company is run by the lovely duo Becky and Lisa. Together they create hand sewn organic baby quilts and receiving blankets. The idea for Organic Quilt Company started with Becky's love for quilting and passion for the environment. In 2008 she began this business venture and by 2011 it was too busy for one person to handle, so she asked her friend Lisa to join her.
"We stitch a line of contemporary organic baby textiles (blankets, burp cloths, hats, hooded towels, bedding, and bibs) with a special emphasis on custom and made-to-order quilts for folks of all ages." - Becky
Long term, the two would love to add a home line of textile things like quilted pillows and adult quilts, but for now the two aim to keep OQC going and growing. Both Becky and Lisa work full time and enjoy the ever changing variety and challenges that running a small business brings into their lives. Like other makers and artists I've encountered, one of their biggest hurdles was sourcing material that matched what they wanted for their business (in 2008 Becky struggled to find organic cotton fabrics). Luckily today there are a number of fantastic organic fabric houses. Now the struggle is with having so many prints, it's hard to choose what one.
"Work hard but have fun doing it. If it isn’t fun and it doesn’t bring you joy, change it up, sort it out, or find something else to do. Life’s too short to spend your life toiling away at something you don’t enjoy." -Becky
Their mornings start even before their kids are up and out of bed, when they can be found thanking overnight customers, answering inquiries and listing new items. Both Becky and Lisa walk or bike their kids to school each morning and then begin their daily tasks which complimenting one another. Becky spends the majority of her time sewing and stitching hats, towels, crib and toddler bedding, and of course, quilts! Becky also works on photographing the items and keeping up with orders. Lisa stitches blankets, burp cloths and bibs and deals with bookkeeping and wholesale.
They were best friends before becoming business partners and remain each other's primary support system. Becky has loved sewing since she was a little girl. She can be found "helping her three children with homework, tending her veggie and perennial gardens, knitting cozy socks, or going for family walks." Lisa was introduced to sewing by Becky and instantly became addicted. She enjoys eating and playing with her two children and is so busy that she "has yet to finish a cryptic crossword, but won't stop trying."
Lisa and Becky make a great pair. I really enjoyed reading about them and their story. The two have a great dynamic and it is evident in the items they make that this is their passion. I love my little burping clothes and can't wait to use them!
