Please remember that all Habitat Schoolhouse resources are designed to be developmentally age appropriate, however, each child learns at their own pace. This kit will help you choose the resources and curriculum that will be the best fit for your child.
Each task assesses a different component of phonetic reading and writing, starting with the alphabet and continuing up to multisyllabic words. The progression of skills is relatively linear, but each learner is different. For example, your child may score low on reading words with a silent “e”, but also could excel at reading consonant digraphs. Similarly, within a single task, your child may score high on reading words with that specific phonetic pattern, but struggle to distinguish the spoken phonemes when writing them.
PURPOSE OF THE SCREENING
Since Habitat Schoolhouse material is individualized, it is important to determine what level you will begin with. Just because a child has been promoted from one grade to the next does not mean the material covered was necessarily learned or understood fully.
Each grade of the Habitat Schoolhouse Curricululm covers the core education standards for that grade level for the United States and Canada. In order to move onto the next resource or next grade level we suggest your child be able to work about 70% of the material covered to consider it successfully taught and mastered. Each grade level builds on concepts covered in the previous grade so it is important to understand these concepts before moving forward. There is nothing wrong with going through material multiple times to really grasp and understand the concepts.
